Everybody knows someone who has been recently
laid off. It's a sign of the times. Today's
economy is a mess as organizations downsize,
close down or re-organize!Many people find
themselves suddenly out of work and wondering
what to do next.
There are basically three choices.
* Get a new job in the same field you have
been working in
* Look for a job in an entirely different
field
* Start your own business and work from home
The first thing you should do if you should
find yourself among the unemployed is take a
few days off! This is not as strange as it
sounds because you need some time to
re-energize and get prepared for the upcoming
challenge.
Searching for a new career can be very
stressful, emotionally and physically
draining; therefore, a few days to relax is
indeed a good thing.
Now that you are rested and re-energized it's
time to get busy. If you decide to look for
new work then the first thing you should do
is gather all your resources. Who do you know
that may be able to help you find the job you
are searching for. Call them and ask them to
keep their eyes open for any positions where
they work.
Get your resume in order and make sure you
are prepared for an interview. Know your
strengths and weaknesses, a good interviewer
will ask these questions. Also be sure you
can talk about success stories in your past
jobs; what did you accomplish. What do you
have to offer your new potential employer?
I was laid off over a year ago and decided to
not look for a new job. Instead I opted to
work from home doing something I enjoy. I
have been designing websites for several
years and had a few clients so I took this
opportunity to expand the business and it is
consistently growing.
Since I have not been working 40 hours per
week and commuting 10 hours per week I seem
to be a lot less stressed. My diabetes is
under better control and my blood pressure
has improved. I now have time to walk every
day and exercise more. If I hadn't been laid
off I would not have had the time to expand
my web design business, so actually a new
door has been opened for me!
The bottom line here is don't despair when
things get tough. These are hard times and
the economy is in pretty bad shape. Many
people have been laid off from work or are in
danger of losing their jobs and their homes.
But when the going gets tough...the tough get
going!
Look deep inside yourself and you will find
that you have some special talents. All you
have to do is figure out what it is you like
to do and then find a way to make some money
doing it!
