Thermostats or Thermometers?
A thermostat sets the temperature in a
room. Because of its work, the entire
environment of a room can change in a
minute, becoming hotter or colder. A
thermometer measures the
temperature of its surrounding. It is
changed by its environment, measuring
higher or lower depending on the
temperature.
As Christians, we are the light of the
world. Our light should not be hidden,
but should be shown to illuminate and
change our environments. People
should be able to see our good works,
and glorify our Father, Who is in heaven.
(Matthew 5:14-16)
Romans 12:2 says that we are not to be
conformed to, or become like, the
world. We should rather be
transformed by the renewing of our
minds, so that we would be able to
prove the good, acceptable, and perfect
will of God.
Because of Christ in our lives, our
presence should set the
tone/atmosphere of the world around
us, rather than it directing or controlling
us. We should not become like those
in the world, but they should become
more like us. They should be able to
imitate us, as we imitate Christ.
Let us be thermostats, and not
thermometers, for our Lord.
