| The Effect of Today's Economy on Moms |
 |
|
By Cathy Lopez
Many years ago
it was possible for moms to stay at home
and care for their families. It was not
uncommon for a child to enter the house
after school and be invited to the
wonderful smell of fresh baked cookies or
for the husband to come home from work
to a set table with dinner about to be
served. But today moms are often rushing
through the door at the same time that
their children and husbands are and
dinners are often ordered out or prepared
quickly at home. Cookies are bought at
the store and broken apart and shoved in
the oven. Rarely do you see a homemade
pie resting on the window sill on a
beautiful fall afternoon. Today's economy
leaves little opportunity for the mom to
even stay at home anymore let alone have
the time to put into all the little extras that
used to be so common many years ago.
Many families today can hardly
survive on one income and many of the
families who can still seek that little bit of
extra and more and more mothers are
being drawn away from the home and into
the job market. But this isn't necessarily a
bad thing and it doesn't necessarily have
to lead to a complete loss of tradition
either. Today's moms have to be more
willing to seek help from their partners on
the home front. You may not get your
husband in the kitchen making a pie from
scratch but you might be able to get him to
supervise the kids baking cookies.
Today's moms have got to be
comfortable with delegating some of their
tasks to both their husbands and their
children. Often you will be quite surprised
at how easy it is to get help but the key to
getting that help is asking. One thing that
every mother knows is that if you want
something done you're going to either
have to do it yourself or ask your husband
or kids to do it. Rarely will you find them
volunteering their services, even if it
involves something that they should have
done to begin with. Just as moms are
adjusting to taking on additional tasks so
are children and husbands as well.
The weakening economy though
does not necessarily have to mean a
weakening family bond. In fact the more
team oriented approach to family life
today may even be used to strengthen the
family bond. When a family works together
to improve their lives as a whole it should
be looked upon as a lesson to be learned
by children and adults alike. What your
children learn from watching and
participating in your family's growth is
something that they will always take with
them. From today's family children will
learn what it means to sacrifice
individually for the better of the whole
family, something that every child should
learn. These are the kinds of lessons that
will strengthen the family at a time when it
feels that families are so far apart.
